Dr. G’s Story

What does it take to walk 14 kilometers to school every day, immigrate to a new country alone, switch careers at 32, and then earn one of dentistry’s most respected credentials? For Dr. Fesehatsion Gebrehiwot, known to his patients simply as Dr. G, the answer is the same quality he’s carried since childhood:

  • Resilience

In early 2026, Dr. G was featured in AGD Impact, the official publication of the Academy of General Dentistry, as part of their Member Spotlight series. His story traces a path from a small rural village in Eritrea, East Africa, to building a thriving dental practice in Wylie, Texas, and earning his AGD Fellowship, a credential that requires completing a minimum of 500 hours of approved continuing education.

It’s a story worth telling. And it says a lot about the kind of dentist you’ll find at Trusted Dental Care.

Growing Up in a Village with No Electricity or Clean Water

Dr. G was born the fifth of nine children in a rural village in Eritrea. There was no electricity, no clean drinking water, and no school nearby. During the devastating 1980s drought and famine that swept across East Africa, his family, like so many others, faced genuine uncertainty about whether they’d have enough food. Yet his father believed in one thing above everything: education. He made the courageous decision to send Dr. G and his older brother to school, even though the nearest one was seven kilometers away.

“Every day, we walked a 14-kilometer round trip. Before that, we helped with farming: plowing fields, tending animals, fetching water from a well two kilometers away. Then the long walk to school. Then home again, working until sunset.”

That daily discipline, hard, exhausting, and often uncertain, built something Dr. G would rely on for the rest of his life: the ability to keep going when things get hard.

A Diversity Visa, a New Country, and a First Dental Visit That Changed Everything

At age 20, Dr. G won the U.S. Diversity Visa Program lottery, a chance at a new life. He arrived in America alone, timid, and deeply homesick. From a family of nine in a close-knit village, the silence of his new life was overwhelming. He adapted. He graduated with an engineering degree from Arizona State University and accepted a position at Motorola. Holding his first paycheck felt surreal, like the American Dream realized.

Then came a routine dental appointment that wasn’t routine at all.

He walked in unaware of his oral health situation, significant calculus, bleeding gums, multiple cavities, and walked out with something unexpected: a calling. He thought of his father, who had suffered tooth pain in silence his entire life because dentistry simply didn’t exist in their village.

  • That moment planted a question that wouldn’t let go: What would it take for me to become a dentist?

Pivoting From Engineer to Dentist at 32

Dr. G was working full-time at Motorola and enrolled in a master’s program in engineering when he decided to explore dentistry. He took one biology class, just to see, and that single course changed everything.

“I came to this country with nothing. I lose nothing by trying for something greater.”

He started dental school at 32. People told him he was crazy for leaving a stable engineering career. But he had already walked 14 kilometers every day to school as a child. He had already crossed an ocean alone. He knew how to do hard things. He pushed through the Dental Admission Test, Dental Boards Part I and II, and dental school, and in 2018, he did something remarkable: he opened Trusted Dental Care from scratch in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, in a community where he had no existing connections.

Why Dr. G Trains More Than Most Dentists You’ll Ever Meet

Opening a practice was just the beginning. Dr. G knew that to serve his patients the way they deserved, he needed to be the best-trained version of himself. So he sought out mentors and a world-class education. Today, he averages more than 300 hours of continuing education annually, a number that dwarfs the Texas state requirement.

He has trained at:

All of this training directly shapes how Dr. G approaches your care, not just technically, but philosophically. He believes dentistry should be rooted in excellence, compassion, and meaningful relationships with patients.

What the AGD Fellowship Really Means

The Fellowship award from the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) is one of the most respected credentials in dentistry. It requires completing at least 500 hours of approved continuing education across multiple dental disciplines and passing a comprehensive examination. Dr. G earned his AGD Fellowship in 2026, and his next goal is AGD Mastership, which requires 1,100+ total hours of CE, including hands-on participation courses. For patients at Trusted Dental Care in Wylie, TX, this isn’t just a plaque on the wall. It’s a signal: your dentist holds himself to a standard far beyond what’s required.

  • Only about 7% of U.S. dentists earn the AGD Fellowship designation. It’s a mark of commitment that most patients never think to ask about but should.

Serving Wylie and the DFW Community with Purpose

Dr. G’s story isn’t just inspiring; it shapes how he shows up for every patient who walks through the door at Trusted Dental Care. He has a particular heart for patients who are anxious about dental visits, for immigrants and first-generation Americans who may be navigating healthcare systems that feel unfamiliar, and for young people who need to see that their background is not a barrier to their future.

From serving families throughout Wylie, Sachse, Murphy, Garland, Plano, and the greater Dallas area, Dr. G brings the same determination to every appointment, whether it’s a routine cleaning, a smile transformation, or a complex full-mouth restoration.

“From a village with no electricity to becoming a leader in modern dentistry — my story is a testament to what is possible when determination meets opportunity.”
