Can Discolored Porcelain Veneers Be Whitened?

Porcelain veneers are a fast, effective way to rejuvenate your smile. If you experience imperfections, like cracked, misaligned, discolored, or chipped teeth, porcelain veneers can conceal these issues. They are also easy to customize and help create a natural-looking smile by enhancing the shape, size, length, or color of your teeth. While they do last a long time, you may need to have them changed after several years. At Trusted Dental Care in Wylie, TX, Dr. Fesaha Gebrehiwot or “Dr. G.” specializes in cosmetic, general, and restorative dental services to help meet your oral care needs. We invite you to read through our blog and schedule an appointment to receive additional information about porcelain veneers.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin teeth coverings that conceal flaws in your smile. Customized for your cosmetic dental needs, Dr. G. will discuss your veneer options and create a treatment plan during a consultation. The process to place your veneers usually takes two appointments to complete. We start by removing a small amount of tooth enamel, so the veneers fit comfortably and bond better to the tops of your teeth. Next, a digital impression is taken of your teeth and sent to our lab with instructions about your customizations, including color, size, and shape. Until you receive your personalized veneers in about two weeks, you will have a temporary set to wear. We will schedule a follow-up appointment to have your customized veneers bonded to your teeth. Once in place, Dr. G. may make minor changes for added comfort.

After your treatments in Wylie, TX, you can typically resume your daily tasks since we do not use anesthesia to place either sets of your veneers.

Can veneers stain?

Veneers are more stain-resistant than your natural enamel. However, you may want to avoid darker colored food or drinks to help keep your smile white and bright. While discoloration does not occur immediately, it can gradually happen over time. To keep your smile healthy and glowing, we recommend not chewing ice, pens or pencils, or your fingernails because this could damage your veneers. With proper oral care, regular dental exams, and cleanings, your veneers can last for up to ten years.

Does teeth whitening work on porcelain veneers?

Teeth whitening products work well on your natural teeth, but it will not change the color of your veneers. If they become too stained, Dr. G. may recommend replacing your veneers to whiten the smile. Routine brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings help minimize discoloration. If you feel unhappy with your veneers because of stains, please let Dr. G. know, and he can create a treatment plan to change them out.
