What Are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a type of veneer, a thin, custom-made shell designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. Unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers are made from a special type of porcelain that’s incredibly thin yet strong, allowing for a minimally invasive application process. They can be used to address a variety of dental concerns, including discoloration, gaps, and minor misalignments, giving you a brighter and more symmetrical smile.

Why Choose Lumineers vs. Traditional Porcelain Veneers?

  1. Minimally Invasive: Lumineers require little to no tooth reduction, preserving your natural tooth structure.
  2. Painless Application: The process is usually painless, with minimal discomfort during and after the procedure.
  3. Reversible: Since they don’t require extensive tooth reshaping, Lumineers can be removed if desired.
  4. Long-Lasting: With proper care, Lumineers can last up to 20 years.
  5. Natural Appearance: Lumineers provide a natural look that blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.

Are Lumineers Right for You?

To qualify for Lumineers, you’ll need:

  • Minor Teeth Imperfections: Lumineers are ideal for individuals with mild to moderate cosmetic dental concerns of the upper and lower teeth, such as discoloration, chipped teeth, gaps, or minor misalignments.
  • Sufficient tooth enamel: Candidates should have enough healthy tooth enamel to ensure proper bonding of the Lumineers.
  • Good oral health: Candidates should have good oral hygiene and healthy gums to support the long-term success of Lumineers.
  • Realistic expectations: Candidates need to have realistic expectations about the results and understand the limitations of Lumineers.

Even though Lumineers are commonly called “instant orthodontics,” they can’t repair bite issues. Therefore, if you have a serious over/underbite, conventional braces or Invisalign® could be a more ideal solution for now. Individuals with bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching) may not be suited for Lumineers.

The Lumineers Process

Initial Consultation

The first step is a consultation with our dentist in Wylie, Dr. G. During this appointment, we’ll discuss your dental health and aesthetic goals. Dr. G will evaluate whether Lumineers are an appropriate treatment option for you.

Preparation

If you’re a suitable candidate for Lumineers, our Wylie dentist will take an impression or mold of your teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental laboratory where your Lumineers will be custom-made for you. We’ll work with you to select the color that best matches your surrounding enamel while helping to fulfill your cosmetic expectations.

During this stage, unlike traditional veneers, there’s usually no need for extensive tooth reshaping, or the need for temporary veneers while you wait for your Lumineers to be created. This is because Lumineers are so thin (approximately 0.2 mm) and highly translucent, allowing them to replicate the natural appearance of enamel without significant tooth alteration.

Application

Once your Lumineers are ready, you’ll return to our Wylie dental office for the application appointment. Dr. G placed the Lumineers onto your teeth to check the fit and color. Any adjustments can be made at this point before they’re attached. Once the fit and appearance are satisfactory, your teeth will be cleaned and etched (a process to make the tooth surface rougher) to ensure a strong bonding process.

After this, a special cement is applied to the Lumineers, and they’re placed onto your teeth. A curing light is then used to harden the cement and bond the Lumineers to your teeth. Any excess cement is removed, and final adjustments are made as needed.

Following Lumineers Placement

Since Lumineers are customized for your mouth, there’s generally no adjustment period after your restorations have been placed. You’ll be able to eat and drink what you like with assurance since Lumineers are bonded in such a durable manner and resistant to staining.

However, it’s still imperative that you don’t bite down too hard on items such as ice, pens, or hard candies. Lumineers are cared for just like your natural teeth, with daily brushing and flossing and regularly scheduled visits to our cosmetic dentist in Wylie, TX.

How Much Do Lumineers Cost?

On average, the cost of Lumineers can range from $800 to $2,000 per tooth. Lumineers are considered an elective treatment and are generally not covered by dental insurance providers. Trusted Dental Care does accept a range of flexible payment options, like medical financing, to help make your cosmetic Lumineers more affordable.

During the consultation, Dr. G. will customize your treatment plan to fit your expectations. Our knowledgeable team will then go over your estimated cost and help you explore your payment choices.
