Treatment With Metal Braces
After your initial examination, an individualized treatment plan will be developed by Dr. G. for your unique case. On the day of your appointment, your teeth will be properly cleaned and prepped prior to applying your metal brackets. After we have applied the bonding agent on your teeth, your brackets will be precisely placed and Dr. G. will thread an archwire wire through them. You will have the ability to choose your preferred color for the elastic ties, which keep the wires attached to the brackets. The application process usually moves fairly fast and patients experience little to no discomfort during placement. You can expect to visit Trusted Dental Care around once a month for adjustments and progress exams.
Caring for Your Metal Braces
Keeping up with good oral hygiene at home is extremely important when wearing metal braces. After your braces are placed, Dr. G. and our team will instruct you on how to best clean your teeth and provide you with helpful hints. As a rule of thumb, we suggest that you floss and brush your teeth after every meal. Attending your orthodontic appointments and bi-annual dental cleanings visits can also help to ensure optimal outcomes. Normally, most patients wear orthodontic braces for 1 – 2 years, but your treatment time will ultimately rely on your own unique treatment needs. Once your treatment is over, we will remove the braces and fit your teeth for a retainer, which helps to keep your teeth in their new location.
Handling Emergencies
If you experience a problem with your braces, do not panic. These issues do not need to cause a delay in your treatment. Please contact us if you have any issues with your braces. Until you are able to visit our office, you may be able to solve many issues temporarily on your own with one of the following tips:
Loose Band or Bracket
If the bracket or band remains attached to the wire, leave it where it is. If it is causing discomfort, place sugarless gum or orthodontic wax on it. Occasionally it is possible to take off the elastic band using tweezers to detach the bracket from the wire.
Loose Wire
Try to push the wire back into place with tweezers or a Q-tip. If that is not possible, clip the wire with fingernail clippers or small wire cutters beyond the tooth to which it is attached. You can cover the wire with orthodontic wax or sugarless gum if it is causing discomfort.
Poking Wire
Place orthodontic wax or sugarless gum on the sharp end of the wire.
Soreness
There may be discomfort for several days after every office visit. You can use warm salt water rinses and/or take nonprescription pain medication as needed to provide comfort.
Loose Appliance
If the appliance is poking or sticking you, you can place orthodontic wax on it to keep it stable.
Insurance Coverage for Braces
During your consultation, Dr. G. will go over your treatment choices and cost estimates so you may select the orthodontic method that best meets your needs, goals, and budget. If you have dental insurance, we will call your provider to confirm your coverage and determine your personal expenses. Trusted Dental Care works with many dental insurance plans and will help you maximize your benefits. We are pleased to accept several flexible payment methods and can even help you apply for low-interest medical financing.
